Statement on the “Freedom of Choice Act of 1993”
The Michigan Catholic Conference has a 30-year history of protecting the dignity of the human person and the obligation of civil authorities to respect and promote this dignity. The Judeo-Christian tradition is clear in calling us to protect the unprotected.
The Michigan Catholic Conference opposes any legislation that diminishes life and further erodes right to life policies. Since the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision there have been many efforts by pro-abortion forces to promote their agenda. Most recently is the “Freedom of Choice Act of 1993” (FOCA), now being considered in Congress. This legislation goes beyond the Roe v. Wade decision by forbidding, for the first time, virtually all state regulation of abortion.
We ask the Michigan congressional delegation to oppose this legislation. We will continue to support the right of states to pass laws which protect life at all stages. We urge the Catholic community to assist in this endeavor. We invite every Michigan citizen to join us in efforts to protect the most vulnerable among us.
